Caregivers & Parents

The world of tobacco is changing. No longer are there just cigarettes. There are now e-cigarettes, or "vapes/vape pens". These products still contain high levels of nicotine, but now also come in different flavorings and packages that can be attractive to youth.

The Facts

  • There is no FDA (Food and Drug Administration) guidance over e-cigarettes, including in the ingredients and the potential harm to humans.

  • Acrolein, an ingredient in many e-cigarettes/vapes, can cause permanent lung damage.

  • The liquids used in these devices come in flavors like mint and fruit.

  • No e-cigarette has been found safe by the FDA, or helpful in supporting smokers to quit.

Why start?

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), three common reasons why youth decide to vape are:

"Curious about them."

Used by "friend or family member"
